World Travels
[ ]The States (5 sub-boards)
Home of the brave. The images that TV, film, and music convey of the USA are true. You just have to get out into it to see the straw-chewing Texan cowboys, the purple mountains, the winds sweeping down the plains, the steamboats rolling down the rivers, and even the bleach-blonde starlets whisking past the velvet-rope clubs. New York City and Los Angeles are star-studded giants, but week-long trips can be enjoyed in historic hubs like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, or Boston in the east or in active daytrips out of San Francisco or Seattle out west. The best is getting your kicks out on the two-lane highways connecting the coasts. In the Deep South, pull into colonial coast towns like Charleston in South Carolina, Mississippi blues bars, Louisiana’s gumbo joints, or Elvis’s Graceland. In the Midwest, you can go up the famous arch in St Louis and cross the Mississippi to Chicago. Out in the southwest, crisscross the broad "national park land" from Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park or Montana’s Glacier National Park to Utah’s desert arches that look like red fudge to hikes down the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Budget flights in the states are way behind Europe’s. They don’t call this car country for nothing.

[ ]Australia (5 sub-boards)
Welcome down under! Sure it's got deadly spiders, snakes and sharks, and it's hot, real hot, but that's just the beginning. From the prehistoric gorges of Kakadu National Park, to the white sails of the Sydney Opera House, Australia is a country as big your imagination. Kick back on a beach as white as your mother's wedding dress in Western Australia; lose yourself in the labyrinthine laneways of culture-rich Melbourne or be humbled by red desert sunsets over Uluru. Turn south to visit hundred year old giants that loom large in the forests of Tasmania or take on Sydney, a heady mix of surf, sun, money and sex, and you'll soon realise Australia is a place to be discovered, not feared.

[ ]England (5 sub-boards)
A journey through England is a journey through history - from the ancient megaliths of Stonehenge to the space-age domes of the Eden Project in Cornwall. It's also a trip to the 21st-century: London is gearing up for the 2012 Olympics while cities like Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle revel in their heritage and confidently face the future, with industrial buildings revitalised as waterfront galleries or trendy apartments, flanked by tempting bars, shops, restaurants and some of the finest music venues in the world. The beauty of travel in England is the compact nature of the country. By spending less time going between places and more time in them, you can immerse yourself in the scenery, instead of just breezing through. Whether you're strolling the undulating hills of Oxfordshire, cycling in Norfolk, surfing off Newquay or rock-climbing in the Peak District, England is perfect for activity and adventure. And with time on your side, you'll get closer to understanding local sensibilities: relaxing with the locals in a country pub, enjoying a music festival or watching a cricket match.

[ ]France (5 sub-boards)
French people described as chic, smart, sexy, rude, racist, bureaucratic, bitchy as hell. France the fabled land of good food and wine, of royal chateaux and perfectly restored farmhouses, of landmarks known the world over and hidden landscapes few really know. Savour art and romance in the shining capital on the River Seine. See glorious pasts blaze forth at Versailles. Travel south for Roman civilisation and the sparkling blue Med; indulge your jet-set fantasies in balmy Nice and St-Tropez. Ski the Alps. Sense the subtle infusion of language, music and mythology in Brittany brought by 5th-century Celtic invaders. Smell ignominy on the beaches of Normandy and battlefields of Verdun and the Somme. And know that this is but the tip of that gargantuan iceberg the French call culture.
00
[ ]Greece (5 sub-boards)
Greece offers a myriad of experiences, landscapes and activities. It is the pulsing nightclubs of Mykonos and the ancient beauty of Delos; the grandeur of Delphi and the earthiness of Ioannina; the rugged hillsides of Crete and the lush wildflowers of spring. It is the blinding light of the Mykonos sun, the melancholy throb of Thessaloniki's rembetika (blues songs), the tang of home-made tzatziki, the gossip in the kafeneia (coffee shops). It is the Parthenon - solitary and pristine - lording it over the hazy sprawl of Athens.
00
[ ]Italy (5 sub-boards)
Italy is a moveable feast of seemingly endless courses. Rome bristles with reminders of its Imperial past; Florence and Venice are virtually outdoor museums; Naples is full of Baroque bombast and Palermo locals view their Byzantine-Norman treasures with a shockingly laissez-faire attitude. But Italy’s riches extend far beyond the obvious. Ski in chic Courmayeur or climb the snow-coated peaks of the Sesto Dolomites; strap on your boots and take to the hills of Tuscany or don designer shades and island hop around Sicily; sleep in converted farmhouses and dine in country kitchens on food so good you’ll swear no other cuisine compares.

[ ]Mexico (5 sub-boards)
Mexico is what you make of it. Its multi-billion-dollar tourism industry is adept at satisfying those who like their travel easy. But adventure is what you’ll undoubtedly have if you take a just a few steps off the pre-packaged path. Activity-based tourism, community tourism and genuine ecotourism – the type that actually helps conserve local environments – are developing fast in rural areas. The opportunities for getting out to Mexico’s spectacular wild places and interacting with local communities are greater than ever – from world-class canyoneering near Monterrey or cooking lessons in the Veracruz countryside to hiking the Oaxaca cloud forests and snorkeling the coral reefs of the Yucatán.
Marvelling at a 1300-year-old Maya palace at Palenque as parrots screech and howler monkeys growl in the sweaty emerald jungle around you. This is Mexico. Sliding from a palm-fringed sandy beach into the warm, turquoise waves of the Pacific at Puerto Vallarta. This, too, is Mexico. Dining on salmon enchiladas and chrysanthemum salad at a Mexico City fusion restaurant, dancing through the night at a high-energy Guadalajara nightclub, kayaking at dawn past a colony of Baja California sea lions – all these are unique Mexican experiences. Every visitor goes home with their own unforgettable images.

[ ]Spain (5 sub-boards)
When you think of Spain, you think of glamour and passion. The bullfights, the flamenco, the festivals, the nightlife – how can you not swoon at the sheer excitement of it all? Though glitz and fire courses through its veins, Spain has much more to offer. Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and El Greco are all members of Spain’s amazing history of art and the awe-inspiring Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao has cemented Spain’s status as an international destination for modern art. Meanwhile, architecture buffs can revel in the multitude of influences that led to a distinctly Spanish aesthetic – Moorish, Gothic, Roman, and Celtic, to name a few. While some of Spain’s spectacular beaches are notorious for a hard-partying lifestyle (Ibiza comes to mind), there are plenty of quiet seashores where you can catch your breath before diving back into the action. Expansive mountain ranges and forests offer even more year-round getaways for dormant party animal and adventurer alike; head to the Pyrenees for challenging ski slopes or make your way to Picos de Europa, the largest national park in Europe, for all of the wilderness you can handle. All of these options make Spain the ideal destination for young and old, novice and veteran travelers, and everyone in between.
